Americans Love Coffee

In major US cities, there are coffee shops on almost every corner. You’d think that we were a nation of narcoleptics unable to walk more than a block without falling asleep. Oh great another coffee shop, only need seven more cups before I get to my office. The reality is that Americans love coffee. Every since the Boston Tea Party it’s been our nation’s drink of choice. And with the recent explosion of gourmet coffee shops serving lattes, espressos and cappuccinos in every way possible, we’re drinking more than ever.

When I was young we were told not to drink coffee because it could stunt your growth. When I go to coffee shops today, they’re filled with young people. Are we raising a generation of half pints? Since coffee is second only to oil as the most popular traded commodity, having a short population isn’t a big deal.

Coffee is made from the beans (seeds) of the coffee plant. Coffea Arabica and Coffea Robusta are the two main types of coffee plants. Coffea Arabica is considered by coffee experts to be superior in flavor. And for this reason the premium coffees of the world are made with Coffea Arabica. Robusta is an easier plant to grow and thus is more common. Maxwell House, Fulgers etc are made with Robusta. Coffee shops have become ubiquitous in the U.S. and other parts of the world. It’s no wonder that it’s hard to walk around without seeing people holding a coffee cup in their hand.
