Making Good CoffeeThere’s nothing worse than a bad cup of coffee. You’ve all had one. The worst part about it is the expectation of a great cup and then the letdown when that bitter or burnt flavor hits your taste buds. This guide will show you what’s important and what to avoid when making a cup of coffee.Use good tasting water - They say our bodies are made of 90% percent water, well our coffee is too. If you usually don’t drink tap water then why make your coffee with it. Filtered water or bottled water will make your coffee taste better. Measure twice, brew once - There’s an old carpenter’s saying to measure twice and cut once and that can easily be applied to coffee as well. Use 2 tablespoons of ground coffee for every 6 ounces of coffee being made. More than that will give you stronger, more bitter coffee and less results in weak, watery coffee. Get a measuring spoon or a coffee scoop to make your measurements more consistent. Clean your coffee maker – With regular use your coffee maker will develop a mineral build up that can change the taste of your coffee. To clean it run your coffee maker without any coffee in it. Use half water and half white vinegar. Then run it once using only water to rinse out the vinegar. Don’t boil the water – If using a manual coffee maker like a french press, do not boil your water. Pouring boiling water over your coffee grinds will scald them and that will effect the flavor. If using a tea kettle to heat the water, never let it whistle. Don’t reheat – The microwave and coffee should never be used in the same sentence. Reheating coffee is a great way to suck the flavor out. Just say no! Don’t overheat – If you don’t finish your pot of coffee within 20 minutes, then dump it. Sitting on a burner for any longer than that will certainly ruin a pot of coffee. Use fresh grinds – Coffee grinds are sold in an airtight container for a reason. Once you open a can of coffee, you’ve got two weeks to use it before it starts going stale. Making coffee is an enjoyable experience. A ruined cup of coffee is enough to ruin your day. Follow these simple tips when making coffee and you will be rewarded with a great cup every time. |
